It’s crazy to think that this will be our 3rd christmas is our first home! We’ve slowly but surely been making our way around the home taking on little DIY projects. Some days the list feels never ending and other days it’s amazing to look back at all that we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time and with such little funding. While we still have a long way to go to make this the home of our dreams but if you are a new homeowner or just looking for DIY project inspiration look no further!

New Paint
By far my least favorite thing to do, but boy does a fresh coat of paint do wonders to a room! It’s the most cost efficient way to breathe life into a room and begin putting your mark on your home.

Create A Drop Zone
Establishing a zone in your home for keys, jackets and shoes is one of the best ways to create separation of clutter from your other home decor. If you are like us and don’t have a defined mudroom space; try hanging a small coat rack over a bench for an easy DIY project. It creates a place to put on shoes and keeps your keys and jackets handy when running out the door.
We’ve even amped up the idea of our drop zone a bit more by planning out a board and batten wall that give the effect of a mud room and also protects our walls from the inevitable wear and tear.

Freshen Up The Fireplace
If your home has a fireplace, revamping the face of your fireplace makes a surprisingly huge impact. Most of the time, the fireplace is the heart of the home and living space. Freshening up a fireplace with new paint or a modern mantle is a great place to start.
When tackling our fireplace, we wanted to lighten up our living room by also lightening up our fireplace. We took off the heavy ornate fireplace mantle, cleaned the brick grout and installed a slender modern wood mantle. I would encourage you to step out of the box here and make a statement!

Statement Wallpaper
Wallpaper is one of those things I remember peeling off my parents walls as a kid and wondering who in their right mind would ever put wallpaper on their walls. Well it really is true when they say what comes around goes around! Although – we outsmarted our parents by opting for peel and stick wallpaper, choosing a statement wallpaper for your home is a bold way to make a change that isn’t permanent!
I knew I was never going to get Justin to agree to a floral statement wall in any of the main rooms in our home so I convinced him to a mini makeover of our laundry room. The wallpaper added just the right dimension to a small otherwise boring room. And since I am the one that spends the most time in the laundry room, I might as well love it!

Painted Cabinets
If you are like most other new homeowners, you likely don’t have a ton of money to spend on a kitchen remodel. In fact, it took us almost 3 years to even feel comfortable tackling our dark and dated kitchen. Other than a quick refinish to the floors, the kitchen cabinets were something we knew we could DIY to help save a buck. We hope to paint them in the new year but there is so much painted cabinets DIY inspo on Pinterest that I really am excited about this DIY project.
From what I’ve been told and read, its a large project – especially based on your number of cabinets but DIYing your cabinets is the most cost efficient way to make an impact on perhaps the largest surface in your kitchen.
