And just like that Valentines day is only a month away! For as long as I can remember Valentines day has always been an important day to me. I love the idea of love and celebrating love! Sure having someone to spend the day with makes the holiday a lot more enjoyable but I even appreciate the modern take on valentines day, aka galantines day, where you celebrate the love for the leading ladies in your life. While we should be cherishing our relationships a lot more than just one day a year, having a special occasion to celebrate can be fun!
It wasn’t until I started dating Justin that I learned that celebrating and gifting, especially on Valentines day comes in many shapes and forms. You can gift someone your time, your attention, your creativity in a DIY gift or thoughtfulness in a store bought gift. Each gift should be cherished the same when you begin to appreciate the effort put into finding that perfect gift!
I can honestly tell you that this was a hard lesson for me to learn and might have taken me a few years to fully understand. What really helped put it into context for me was a book I read called The 5 Love Languages (if you don’t know what your love languages are click here to take the survey). The principles behind the 5 love languages are that we all have different love languages – touch, quality time, words of affirmation, gifts and acts of service. We each give love differently than we receive it and often times our love languages are not the same as our partners.
For example gifting is one of my top 5 love languages. the idea of gifting on Valentines day or any other holiday rather, was always second nature to me. Justin on the other hand loves touch (like most men lol!) and words of affirmation and acts of service. So if I hug him, tell him he’s handsome and then cook him dinner, I have basically ticked all the boxes! Now if only it were that easy in real life 😉
The point I am trying to say is that it took me a while to recognize that its possible to see, feel and celebrate love in ways that I wasn’t even aware of. Valentines day isn’t just about the love you receive but more importantly about the love you give. And its this realization that has only amplified my love for Valentines day and made it that much more special of a day that I get to share with Justin.
No matter how you celebrate your Valentines day, I hope you know that you are loved and I am so thankful to have you in my little tribe!
